Rebert ParkHarrison

The photographer i chose for the virtual essay is Robert ParkeHarrison. Robert is a photographer that is best known for his work in the fine art photography with his wife Shana ParkeHarrison. Their works have been displayed in 18 solo exhibitions and over 30 group shows worldwide, also it can be found in over 20 collections. Many of his photographs included a man with a black suit in a natural backgrounds like a grass fields that is trying to fix the field with little implements and crazy ideas. The main purpose of these is to create a surreal feel that express the major issues for nowadays “global warming”, and how we are going to recover the issues that was caused by ourselves.

There is a European photographer name Sarolta Bán who i find that her photography are similar to Robert ParkeHarrison. Both of their photography have a relations to the nature and the tree, however the main purpose of Sarolta is to combine ordinary elements as she said “I like using ordinary elements and by combining them, I can give them various stories, personalities. I hope that the meanings of my pictures are never too limited, are open in some way, each viewer can transform them into a personal aspect. So I’m happy if different people find different meanings in my images.” and Robert’s main focus on surreal imagination.

“surreal imagination and an impeccable sense of wit and irony, to address issues about the earth and mankind's responsibility to heal the damage he has done to its landscape.”- Robert Parke Harrison

From the pictures above you can see that both of their works are very similar, both of them have a man in a suits, tree and birds are carrying a object or human. It remind us of our affect on nature, whatever it is the marks that we leave on the earth.

“My photographs tell stories of loss, human struggle, and personal exploration within landscapes scarred by technology and over-use…. [I] strive to metaphorically and poetically link laborious actions, idiosyncratic rituals and strangely crude machines into tales about our modern experience.” - Rebert ParkHarrison

Press Photography VS Art Photography

Press photography is synonymous with Photojournalism, which is like a news photography. Press photography are using series of photographs to record news, events and even to our life stories. The press refers to the printing press used to produce a newspaper. The main mission of press photography is to capture the photo that involved with emotions in the event where the readers can see and feel what is like to be there. And those pictures then will be reproduced in the newspaper or magazines.

Photographed by: John Moore

Art photography is a photographs that are created by an artist, where the artist using their creative vision as a photographer. Art photography give the freedom to photographer to capture any photographs can they can expressive in the way that they want want, their main goal is to capture an photo that represents an interpretation of the subject.

Fine Art photography by Shaun Alexander Los Angeles

Fine Art photography by Toni Frissell

Similarities between Art and Press.
  • Both styles need to capture an photo to tell a story.
  • Both of them talk to people and express the purpose through photo.

Differences  between Art and Press.
  • It is possible to edit and alter afterward the image being capture as a art photography.
  • Press photography can not change anything after the shoot.
  • Press photography can be presented without any explanation.

I think it is ethical and acceptable to alter art photographs. It is acceptable because most of the art photographer consider themselves as an artists, and most of the artists need to edit or fix their work before they publish to the public, because artists want to make their work to express the meaning that they wanted to express. Also art photographs is one part of art, where they need to be touched by the artist to put on their creative into the picture. There i think it is ethical and acceptable to alter art photographs. But on the other hand, i do not think it is ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs because press photographs are publish to the public to tell the true story of the image, which you can not have any unreal element in the photo, otherwise people will misunderstand what is the true expression that the press photo trying to express. Therefore, i do not think it is ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs.

Assignment 1

Mustang GT500

The first picture it is one of my favor car that I costumed on the ford website. The car is called Mustang, one of popular muscle car in the United States.  From the origin picture you can see that the brand new Mustang is making the smoke by doing the burnout in a parking lot to shows how powerful is the Mustang.  However, I believe many people already know how powerful are the mustang from the origin picture, but I did add some effect to the picture to heighten that powerful, and show different meaning of the origin picture. First thing I did it I add the effect call HDR to the car to bring out the colour of the car, and used the comic effect on it to add the side effect on the car like add scratch on the car to make it look little bit older car and the shadow come out from the car to show that the main focus is on the car, also at the side I add a text “runaway” to tell us that this mustang is running away from something like a crime scene.  The reason I made all these change is that I want to let everyone know that mustang will be a chose for you if you decide to run away from something.

林丹( Dan Lin)

For this picture, he is known as the greatest badminton player of all time, two time Olympic champion, four time world champion and five time all England champion, he’s name is Dan Lin, also know a Super Dan. For this picture I didn't do a lot change to it because I don’t want to let the audience to be confused. As you can see from the origin picture is little dark or not brighten to the meaning of the picture. This picture is taken after Dan won the 2012 Olympic game in badminton, so I added the classics lomo effect on there to light up the picture, and also add the light the left top corner to shine Dan.  The reason I did theses changes is to make the picture little bit alive and to show that he is a shining star in the badminton field.

Background

Roger Fenton:

Mathew Brady:

  • One of the most celebrated 19th century American photographers
  • Brady was born in Warren County, New York
  • He study painting with famed portrait painter William Page
  • He was involved with taking the first picture of the American Civil War

Alexander Gardner:

  • Gardner was a Scottish photographer who moved to United States.
  • Best known for his photographs of the American Civil War and Lincoln.
  • He was born in Paisley in Scotland.
  • He was also known as controversy in and through his photographs.

Robert Capa:
  • Robert was born in Endre Erno Friedmann
  • He was a Hungarian combat photographer and phojournalist
  • Been to five different wars: Spanish Civil War, Second Sino Japanese War, World War II, Arab Israeli War and First Indochina War.

Similarities and differences

These are Similarities and difference between these four photojournalists. First of all, they all were photojournalists of the war. But they show the war in different views or focused in different point, like Fenton only want to show the good side of war, avoiding those injured, mutilated or even the dead soldiers. Its only show one side of the war not the entirety. However, Brady it’s completely different in his approach, he’s showing both side of the war, not matter it’s good or bad. And for Gardner who is known for potentially manipulating his pictures to depict more dramatic situation, but he is also known for showing both side of the war, with more dramatic sequence on the bad side. Also Capa who was known as the realistic photographic, who’s willing to get in to no matter how risky, how difficulty or how far fetched the situation, he would do whatever he could do to capture the realistic picture. And he said “If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough.". this is the reason that he sets himself apart from the other photographers, because he’s willing to get closer than any other photographer, to portray a sense of involvement with the picture he took.
